As a journalist, I haven't had many opportunities to take pictures. My priorities have included article writing and creating infographics instead. Despite my lack of focus in photography, I have managed to take two series of photos; a portrait photography series and coverage of a spirit assembly. Looking forward, I plan to cover more school events and improve upon my photography skills.
In my junior year, I took an intro to photography class in order to sharpen my photojournalism skills. As a final project, I took a series of portrait pictures of a baseball player. I took the photos at his little league baseball field from his childhood to exhibit a sense of reflection on his baseball career as a collegiate athlete. My photography expertise was especially challenged during this shoot due to the changing weather and brightness from an oncoming storm. However, the storm fit as the perfect backdrop since his team's mascot is the lightning "Bolt".
As a social media manager, I utilized my skills developed in my photography class to take pictures for our Padua Media Group accounts. With my new understanding of photography principles, I took pictures that had balance, rhythm, pattern, emphasis, contrast, unity, and movement. I also sharpened my photojournalism skills by photographing and editing school events and staff members in action. These pictures in particular were cropped to fit the Instagram square size and the brightness was adjusted for better quality.
Last month, I photographed the Catholic Schools Week spirit assembly as a part of Coverage Wars. This was a group assignment that combined the journalism and PATV class into 2 teams to cover the week's activities as thoroughly as possible. It also helped push the staff to participate in assignments out of their comfort zone. For me, this assignment was a challenge but an exciting one. Although I was rusty behind a camera, I managed t0 get these great action shots from the event. I tried to capture the moments of celebration, participation, and emotion.
Junior Ring Mass Ceremony
Most recently, I photographed the Class of 2023 Ring Mass ceremony. Despite volunteering to take on this assignment hours before the event, I managed to capture beautiful stills of the ceremony. Since this tradition is one of 3 major milestones for a Padua student, I felt it was crucial to document every aspect of the event for my photo gallery. This included prayer, communion, readings, and the actual ring ceremony. Although the lighting within the church was supplied by almost 100-year-old light fixtures, I utilized the contrast between light and dark to my advantage.
