The focus here is to clarify the different experiences that people encounter with different methods and to begin to develop new maps. Like geographical landmarks and maps that help people find their way through cities, suburbs and countryside, we need landmarks and maps of consciousness to help people navigate those terrains.
For thousands of years humans have been exploring the mystery of consciousness. In traditional cultures, people developed creation myths, sacred narratives and rituals to make sense of and guide people through various states of consciousness. In religions like Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism, the formative experiences of the founders of the traditions and later by adepts were recorded in teachings and stories and codified into systems, often with ethical and ritual practices.
In the Ancient Mystery traditions and Shamanic traditions, people have and still do help guide people through various states of consciousness with rituals and intentions. Individuals attempt to navigate through the ecology of these experiences by 'programming' their Set and Setting.
Some psychonauts and advanced practitioners have drawn maps, often as vertical continuums or hierarchies... Low to High... Much like the old vision of the Great Chain of Being. Better maps can and need be drawn, maybe more like the Phylogenetic Tree of Life map.
