Concept 1: Calculations Using the Law of Sines
The connection to the project problem: The Law of Sines was used to determine the dimensions of the Rear Axle Support.

Relation to design specifications: To fulfill the design specifications of accommodating different bike sizes, the team calculated the lengths that the Rear Axle Support would have to be to meet specifications. The wheel sizes of 26.0, 27.5, and 29.0 inches were used, meaning that the lengths of the product would have to be 13.0, 13.75, 14.5 inches. Since these are only 1.50 inches apart, the team decided to add more notches for different wheel sizes, expanding the market and further meeting the design specifications. The final design has preset lengths to fit wheel sizes 20.0, 24.0, 26.0, 27.5, 29.0, and 32.0 inches. However, this product is not limited to only these wheel sizes. After being expanded to a certain height, even if the wheel size doesn’t match the specific preset lock, the bike can still be stabilized, just at a different angle.

This was achieved by researching the most common wheel sizes on bikes, primarily mountain bikes without kickstands, and dimensioning the product to accommodate these different sizes.

The connection to the project problem: Originally, the design had a small bar connecting the cylinder to the base. However, on the side closest to the wheel, the bar experiences tension and on the opposite side it experiences compression. These forces could cause the bar to break, therefore making the solution unusable.

Relation to design specifications: In order to hold the bike upright, the product must be usable. By including a weak design, a rectangular bar, the product's ability to fulfill the design specification is put in jeopardy.

The connection to the project problem: The team brainstormed various materials that could be used to ensure the durability and stability of the design.

Relation to design specifications: Design specifications like cost and weight were considered. Many materials evaluated were lightweight, strong, and easy to work with. The biggest factor was the cost as well as brittleness, as the parts are mainly compression members. In the end, the team chose aluminum 6061 due to its good formability. This was taken into consideration because of the need to drill holes into the pipes in order to construct the product.
