Jetstar Japan 2012 Fireworks Collection
Captured with a Sony NEX-3
Thinking back to that night in 2012, setting up on the Nishikasai side to watch the Koto Ward fireworks was an experience. The air was thick with anticipation, the buzz of a summer evening, and the distant rumble of the city. That's where this particular shot came from – one that Jetstar Japan later chose for their collection.
I remember finding my spot, tripod extended, camera ready. The goal was to capture not just the explosions, but the sheer scale of them against the Tokyo skyline. You prepare, you check your settings, you wait. And wait. The sky was still a deep twilight blue, slowly bleeding into black.
There was a funny moment, though. As I was meticulously adjusting the focus, a group of kids nearby, probably around seven or eight, started a countdown. "Go! Go! Go!" they chanted, convinced a huge firework was about to launch. I braced myself, hand poised, only for it to be a small, rather underwhelming fizzle high in the sky. They dissolved into giggles, and I couldn't help but crack a smile too. It was a good reminder that sometimes, even with all the serious gear and concentration, fireworks are just about simple joy.
This particular burst, with its vibrant blues and golds, erupted later in the display. It perfectly illuminated the vastness of the night over the ward, with the distant city lights grounding the spectacle. It felt like the sky was truly celebrating.
t's moments like these, the blend of technical challenge, personal observation, and a little bit of unexpected humor, that make photography so rewarding. You aim for the shot, but you also take in the whole scene.
Until next time, a few more shots from that day are below
