24 Finals in Mandarin Chinese
In Mandarin Pinyin, there are 36 finals (vowels). Finals are an important part of Pinyin because they help us make the sound of a Chinese syllable.
How do we use finals?
In Chinese, a syllable is usually made by putting an initial (the beginning sound) together with a final (the vowel sound), and then adding the tone.
For example:
m + a = ma
b + o = bo
t + u = tu
Finals help us pronounce Chinese characters clearly. Once children learn all the finals, they can start reading many Chinese words using Pinyin!Pinyin helps children develop more native-like Chinese pronunciation.
Finals are the vowel parts of Chinese pinyin. Every final has a tone.
The four tones:
First tone: like “beep” — flat and high.
Second tone: like “what?” — rising.
Third tone: like “well” — dips down then rises.
Fourth tone: like “go” — falling.
If a final has no tone mark, it is neutral.
Note: All pinyin letters are written in lowercase.

Our CSL 1 class will perform at the 2026 Chinese New Year Gala on February 21 in the school auditorium.
This is a great opportunity for students to show what they have learned and to enjoy a fun Saturday celebration with Chinese crafts, raffles, and games. It’s a wonderful way to experience Chinese culture together.
