When students first start learning a foreign language, they often face many challenges such as pronunciation, remembering vocabulary, and feeling shy about speaking. One effective way to help young learners become more engaged is through role-play activities. Role-playing allows children to learn in a natural, fun, and interactive environment.
In this lesson, we use a Supermarket Role-Play Game to help students practice Chinese in a meaningful situation. The classroom is turned into a small supermarket where students can pretend to be customers and cashiers.
The tools we use include:
Toy or real supermarket items
Game coupons
Play money
Picture cards with product names
The teacher first introduces the vocabulary and sentence patterns, such as:
1. nǐ hǎo
你好
2. wǒ xiǎng yào mǎi... ...
我想要买... ...
3.duō shǎo qián
多少钱
4.gěi nǐ
给你
5.xiè xiè
谢谢
Students read the words aloud, practice the dialogue many times, and then use the sentences during the game. Through repeated practice, students gradually become confident and are able to express their ideas in their own way.
This kind of hands-on activity makes language learning more interesting, helps students remember vocabulary more easily, and encourages them to speak without fear.
