Volunteers
The Mancelona Township Library shall use the services of volunteers to supplement the efforts of paid Library staff to provide quality Library services.
Volunteers need to present a positive image to the public and are expected to follow Library policies and procedures.
A volunteer is a person who performs tasks for the Mancelona Township Library without wages, benefits, or compensations or any kind. Volunteers provide work for the Library and will adhere to the same behavior codes as employees.
Volunteers will come into contact with Library patrons and serve as a representative of the Library. Volunteers must present a professional, friendly demeanor at all times.
This policy does not create between the volunteer and the Library. Both the volunteer and the Library can terminate their association at any time, for any reason, without cause being stated.
Volunteers under the age or 18 must have the consent of a parent or legal guardian. The Library will not accept volunteers under the age of 14 and the Library may limit the amount of time these volunteers can work.
Volunteers must follow all Library policies and procedures, especially those relating to confidentiality of Library records. Failure to maintain confidentiality will result in immediate termination of volunteer.
Work performed by the volunteer will be supervised by the Library staff and the schedule of the volunteer is dependent upon availability of staff to supervise.
Volunteers must adhere to their schedule and notify the Library if they will be late or absent.
Selection of Volunteers
Volunteer applications are always available.
If there are not suitable volunteer opportunities available, applications will be kept on file for one year.
Volunteers are selected based on their qualifications in relation to the needs of the Library at any given time and based on their ability to commit to a consistent schedule of volunteer hours.
Volunteers should be willing to work a minimum of 1 hour each shift. These shifts must be scheduled through the volunteer coordinator.
A volunteer's preference of type or work to be performed and hours of the day/week will be considered when possible.
Volunteer Duties
Shelf maintenance: straightening, shelf reading, shifting books, cleaning shelves. Etc.
Cleaning books
Teaching and/or assisting with the computers
Disinfecting computer keyboards, computer mouse, water fountains, counter tops, and tabletops
Cleaning computer stations and surrounding area
Special projects as assigned
Various cleaning tasks
Filing
Making copies for patrons
Other duties necessary
Volunteers are expected to conduct themselves as representatives of the Library and must adhere to the policies and practices established regarding work schedule, attendance, conduct, performance, safety procedures, proper attire, etc.
To encourage volunteerism and to ensure a positive experience at the Library, the Library will:
Designate staff to supervise the volunteer program
Provide volunteer supervision in accordance with sound supervisory practices and Library policies.
Ensure that all volunteers serve in positions that reflect their skills and interests while meeting the needs of the Library.
Provide orientation and training to prepare the volunteers to perform their duties.
Maintain accurate volunteer data, including hours worked.
