SLO 3

Minerals

Quick video going over the classification of minerals

The students will create their own kit to identify minerals! This could be done over time in class to create the kit, and then using it in class as well to actually identify these minerals.

A fun lesson on classifying minerals, definitely for older kids as it may be a bit confusing

A fun activity for students that shows how each rock is formed with food.

Igneous Rocks- Melting chocolate to show a connection between chocolate and lava

Sedimentary Rocks- Observing the layers of a sedimentary sandwich using wheat bread and candy

Metamorphic Rocks- Rubbing the dough of bread together into a ball to show the heat and pressure used in the metamorphic process

Igneous Rocks

A quick video explaining how igneous rocks are formed and the difference between extrusive and intrusive igneous rocks

An activity with starbursts showing how the 3 types of rocks are made, could specifically focus on igneous rocks or do all the types of rocks. Next to it we have to videos on types of rocks and the rock cycle

A fun activity for older kids that would be an at home project, and I would send these directions home, parent supervision would be needed

Intrusive Igneous Rocks

Intrusive igneous rock forms when magma is trapped deep inside the Earth. Great globs of molten rock rise toward the surface.

Extrusive Igneous Rocks

Extrusive, or volcanic, igneous rock is produced when magma exits and cools above (or very near) the Earth's surface. These are the rocks that form at erupting volcanoes and oozing fissures.

Volcanism

Volcano activity for any young children not just preschoolers, using pipe cleaners and play dough to create different types of volcanoes

Fun coloring worksheet for volcanoes

Volcanic word search that uses vocabulary words the students will need to remember

Non-messy volcanic eruption activity where the kids have paint in a zip lock bag and use their fingers to move the paint around, making the volcanoes "erupt"

A fun visual and edible activity for younger students building a volcano using treats, this way we don't have to build a volcano that explodes and is messy

Kid friendly video explaining what causes volcanoes to erupt, they work, and the gases they release

Sedimentary Rocks

Good video on explaining how sedimentary rocks are formed, but would skip forward to 16 seconds and stop at 2:09 because otherwise it talks about the youtuber's account not about rocks

More kid friendly with easier connections for the kids to make with sedimentary rocks and how they are formed

An activity the students would use to show how sedimentary rocks are formed with crayon and aluminum foil

Showing the different layers of sediment for these sedimentary rocks, and could be done in class as a treat as it doesn't require heat

An at home project for older kids where I would send home directions, parent supervision needed

Weathering and Erosion

This experiment would help students visualize what happens to rocks when they are getting weathered down and eroding, while using something they like (candy) to connect with them

An experiment that the students would do in groups. I would buy a pack of sand, spread amongst tin foil bins and have the students create land formations with their hands

Taking sugar cubes and breaking them down with your body weight to show how rocks are getting broken down, simple and hands on

Mass Wasting

Foldable coloring book that talks about mass wasting and topics related, shows the visuals of how changes occur

Brief yet simple and informative video on mass wasting explaining what it is, the different types, and should stop the video at 1:30 because that's when they talk about subscriptions

A more detailed video with great visuals and about 5 minutes

A nice visual activity for the kids, materials included in the video. Would be something the teacher makes for the whole class as they watch, not an individual activity

Deserts

A fun mini book that explains how fossils are formed, a printable that the kids can color themselves

A video for younger kids explaining what deserts are and what they contain

Doesn't need to be shaped as cacti, an activity that can be used in the class with supervision (for students who are a bit older). Shows how cacti absorb water.

Explaining the animals and plants that live in the desert and how they live there, also explaining why they act the way they do or do the things they do because of living in this environment.

Metamorphic Rocks

To show how metamorphic rocks contain several types of rocks, we would take all different types of treats/candies and label them as "rocks", and smash them together to create a new metamorphic rock and put lots of pressure on it

Helpful short video in understanding how metamorphic rocks are created, but only watch 14 seconds to 1:10 otherwise it talks about it's channel website

Quick and kid friendly video on what a metamorphic rock is

An at home project the students would do with their parents, baking chocolate chip cookies where every ingredient is a different "mineral" going into the newly created metamorphic rock, which would be the cookie

Relative Dating

6-7 minute video about relative dating and how geologists figure out the relative age of different rocks (talks about layering)

A worksheet that shows the visuals of relative dating, the kids are able to see where the animals are and then what rock they are in

An activity showing students how fossils work, the link explains how to create this salt dough for them, or I can use play dough to put the dinosaurs in

Another activity where students are seeing how fossils form and this experiment is edible, so it would be great for younger students

Radio Active Dating

Radioactive dating is a method of dating rocks and minerals using radioactive isotopes. This method is useful for igneous and metamorphic rocks, which cannot be dated by the stratigraphic correlation method used for sedimentary rocks

A short simple video talking about half lives in relation to radioactive dating

A short video talking about radioactive dating explaining how carbon is used as well, goes until 1:55

The students could do this lab in class with anything that has two sides, candy is more fun for them however. This helps them see how half of the parent isotopes change to daughters.
