Welcome to the Haleine

Your shuttle bus pulls up a long palm-lined drive that bends around a giant tree. Prop roots grow down from its expansive canopy like a miniature forest. From the brochure you remember that this is a century-old banyan tree. How many people sought refuge in its shade over the years? Or kissed amid the twinkle of the lanterns hung there?

One thing the brochure didn't keep secrets about is the five star hotel that is going to be your vacation home. A young, tanned porter in a pressed white uniform greets you at the entryway before placing your luggage onto his cart. A dark-skinned woman with a bright smile welcomes you with a glass of lemon water and a floral necklace made of real flowers, not the cheap-o dollar store stuff.

"Welcome to The Haleine," she says with an accent that lies somewhere between France and the Indian Ocean. You to realize that her left arm is shortened with a small hand at the end. You're impressed that an establishment that thrives on appearances doesn't seem to discriminate against its employees. "My name is Lakshmi and I'm your hotel liaison. May I offer you a beverage as I check you in?"

You knew the hotel would be hospitable but this is something else. She guides you across a decorative stone bridge overtop a rectangular pond into the lobby. You settle into a white wicker chair with a comfortable floral cushion. She takes your order and in moments, you're enjoying a cool drink and tasty nibbles as you survey the grand interior and the hotel guests.

From the polished, cream marble floors to the modern artwork on the walls, this hotel speaks of quiet decadence. Every counter has undermount lighting matching the soft glow of recessed ceiling. Clusters of blown glass in the shape of giant tropical flowers hover from the ceiling above lush fronds in white, oversized ceramic pots. The far side of the lobby holds a tempting view of the main pool and the beach beyond. Beneath the cool air conditioning lies tempting salty air and you breathe it in deeply.

"You're all checked in," Lakshmi says, "but your suite won't be ready for a little while yet. I'll have your bags delivered when it is."

You anticipated this outcome since your flight arrived early this morning, and you packed a day bag accordingly. You're glad you don't have to sit around the lobby with suitcases. Quite frankly, between Laksmi's calm smile and your soothed palate, you haven't a care in the world.

"Our activity centre is about to begin its programming, if you'd like to see what they have to offer. Our pools and beaches are available if you prefer. Of course, the property is yours to explore. There are lovely views from the walking trails. What would you like to do?"
