Traditional Model
Some students do not ‘fit” in general education classes.
The teacher is the instructional leader
Students learn from teachers and teachers solve problems.
Students are purposely grouped by similar ability
Instruction is geared toward middle achieving students
Grade level placement is considered synonymous with curricular content
Instruction is often passive, competitive and teacher directed
Students who do not “fit in” are excluded from general classes and activities.
Inclusive Education
All students “fit” in general education classrooms.
Collaborative teams share leadership responsibilities
Students and teachers learn from one another and solve problems together
Students are purposely grouped by differing abilities
Instruction is geared to match students at all levels of achievement
Grade level placement and individual curricular content are independent of each other
Instruction is active, creative, and collaborative, among members of the classroom
Activities are designed to include students through participation levels and are varied.
