CUNY ePermits allow MA students at Queens College to take courses at Brooklyn College, the Graduate Center, or other CUNY institutions. Students must work with their program director to determine a "course equivalent" in the Queens College course catalogue for the course they wish to take elsewhere.
Here is a PDF on how to apply for a CUNY ePermit. The link will take you out of the Queens College website. (We are working to make the PDF directly available as a download from this page.)
Below is a rough draft of the ePermit process (version 9/1/2024).
What happens when a QC student applies for an ePermit:
Student files for an e-Permit with CUNY Queens College via CUNYFirst, following the instructions in the PDF above.
The application arrives at the QC registrar's office. If there are no issues (such as bursar's holds or registration problems) the registrar sends the ePermit request to the Chair of the Media Studies Department.
The Chair of the Media Studies department receives the ePermit request by email, and follows the link to a web page where they can approve the ePermit.
If approved, ePermit application is sent back to the registrar.
The registrar then sends the application to the registrar of the host institution for their approval process. (This can take up to two weeks.)
The approval process begins at the host registrar's office. If everything is in order, the registrar sends it to the host department chair.
The host school's department chair must approve the epermit.
No one will be notified about this, but once the host school's department chair has approved the ePermit, the process is complete.
The student must keep checking the CUNYFirst ePermit portal to see where the application is in the process. Once the process is complete, and the host school has approved the permit, the student should contact the associate director of the Media Studies program (Joshua Chapdelaine) to be registered in the course.
How to file an ePermit as a CUNY student who wants to take a course at CUNY Queens College. The process is the same, only the Host institution is now Queens College.
File an e-Permit via CUNYFirst through your school. You will need to work with you Chair to find a "course equivalent" for the course you are taking at Queens.
The registrar and chair of your department will render a decision about the e-Permit
Once your e-permit is approved by your college, you should inform the Associate Director of Media Studies Department at CUNY Queens College - joshua.chapdelaine@qc.cuny.edu - that your ePermit has been approved college. (You may receive an email from CUNYFirst that your permit has been approved. You may need to check on the progress of your ePermit yourself, by going into CUNYFirst and checking on your status. If you have any "holds" it may not go through.)
The associate director can then enroll you in the class. You cannot enroll yourself in an MA course at Queens College.
This process can take 1-3 total weeks.
Please email Josh Chapdelaine (Associate Director, Media Studies MA) with all questions.
