Description:
Starting with the inquiry questions "Who am I?" and "How do I define my identity?", this paper delves into the significance of encouraging identity exploration in young children through picturebooks that depict a variety of identities. By applying Bishop's concepts of “windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors”, I explore themes like name, race, gender, and religion, using different picturebooks to stimulate discussions around these topics. Furthermore, the paper highlights the importance of reading and analyzing children's literature critically to better understand the connection between the "word" and "world", and how diverse representation and critical engagement with texts can foster empathy, understanding, and a sense of belonging in children from various backgrounds.
To be honest, my personal experience with picturebooks was quite limited, as they were largely absent from both my childhood and adulthood. However, after taking EDUC6306 and EDUC6362, I found myself immersed in the fascinating world of picturebooks. Excited about this new discovery, I created a text set using these books, which proved to be an invaluable resource for engaging young minds and addressing a wide range of topics for children of different ages, including younger kids and teenagers.
Having experienced the benefits of picturebooks firsthand, I've become a strong advocate for their use and plan to incorporate more of these engaging resources into my future curriculum. By embracing picturebooks, I believe we can effectively support children's development and contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate world.
