Inquiry into Adolescents Reading the Word and World (Digital Story):
As a high school student, how I perceive exam-oriented education and inquiry-based education?
Type: Individual Project
Format: Interview and Video
Topic Keywords: Inquiry, Adolescent Literacy Practices, Multimodal Space, Test-based Education vs Inquiry-based Education, Critical Thinking, Independent Learning, Formative assessments and feedback
Description:
I had the opportunity to interview some of my former students about the benefits and drawbacks of different education systems, specifically comparing test-based and inquiry-based education. The students shared their personal experiences and opinions on the traditional focus on grammar, vocabulary, and structure, as opposed to the modern approach that encourages creativity and broadens one's horizons. I turned our engaging conversation into a fun and entertaining cartoon video.
Having taught in both China and the United States, two countries renowned for their distinct education systems, I felt uniquely positioned to gather insights from students who had experienced both learning styles. The interview process was incredibly rewarding, as it not only allowed me to connect with my students on a more personal level but also offered me the chance to hear their thoughts and learn from their experiences.
It became clear that students appreciated various aspects of each system, emphasizing the importance of finding a balance between the two approaches. While test-based education provides a solid foundation in language and technical skills, inquiry-based education nurtures critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity—crucial skills for success in today's rapidly changing world.
As an educator, it's essential to continually adapt and evolve my teaching methods based on my students' needs and the ever-changing educational landscape. By listening to their voices and incorporating their experiences into my teaching philosophy, I aim to create a more engaging, inclusive, and effective learning experience for all my students. While I may not be able to change the education system single-handedly, my studies in the master's program and personal experience have inspired me to strive for a balanced approach in my teaching career.
