I am passionate about connecting ʻike kūpuna (ancestral knowledge and perspectives) with keiki (children) and kamaʻāina (local people) to volcano science. I give public talks about this subject at Hawaiʻi State Libraries.
Example events:
At Western Washington University, I was one of the steering representatives for URGE (Unlearning Racism in Geosciences) and was one of the student leaders of the K-12 & Outreach Working Group. In October 2022, we organized a geology field trip for local high school students. High School student participants and Undergraduate and Graduate mentors worked together to learn about making observations as a scientist in the field, identified features in outcrops, and discussed geologic processes. Many high school students hadn't had Earth or Environmental Science courses (75% according to our survey!) so this event was potentially their first exposure to geoscience.
