I am Native Hawaiian/Kanaka Maoli whose ancestors come from the ‘āina of Oʻahu and Moku o Keawe (the Big Island). The ‘āina on which I work, the island of Oʻahu and the ahupuaʻa of Waikīkī, is part of the larger territory recognized by Kānaka Maoli as their ancestral grandmother, Papahānaumoku. I recognize that her majesty Queen Lili‘uokalani yielded the Hawaiian Kingdom to the United States military, under duress and protest to avoid the bloodshed of her people by the foreign colonial power of the United States of America.
