Middlebury High School, AP French - Conflict Minerals lesson - part 1
Video Sequence: Opening of class/intro of myself/unpack theme of Conflict Minerals/engage learners with discussion providing adequate time for responses-advance high level thinking/use of visual media projected on screen - periodic table showing chemical elements within a cellphone to prompt discussion. This chunk of class was Pre-teaching prior to authentic video clip of a mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Analysis/Reflection: This lesson is ripe for expansion into cross curricular topics such as chemistry, geography, history, economics, political science more profoundly. As an AP French level class, 90% of instruction was in target language. It was a rewarding class to design in terms of content and an opportunity for me to practice classroom technology skills. Learners engaged intellectually through group discussion and brainstorming re chemical elements in our everyday things.
2) Sustainability Academy Elementary School, 4th grade - Spring 2019, 3 clips edited together. (1 clip: duration,1:12)
Video Sequence: Classroom management with diverse strategies/ engaging song-movement activity to well known children's song.
Analysis/Reflection: This was a very social class that needed several re-directions, yet were enthusiastic about the content. I was the substitute teacher for this class and thus offered this as a French instructional age-appropriate activity. In the future, in my own classes, I would embed this into an opening routine for establishing a culture of learning in which students would clearly understand their role. I also like to have a different assistant each day to come up and serve as leader of the activity.
