Encouraging students to build relationships with their classmates and become active in the college community ensures that they feel a sense of belonging, which is central to their success in college. Off campus, I planned trips to sporting events, museums, and local festivals to further develop students' sense of connection.
Outside of the classroom, I organized events such as the weekly ESL conversation group and the Women's Network Book Club to provide more spaces for students, faculty, and staff to meet. I also encouraged students to join other organizations on campus and get involved in volunteering opportunities.
I organized cultural events on campus for students to share their life experiences. Students were so proud to represent their cultures to the college. Being immersed in another culture can feel very lop-sided. So much attention is given to the dominant culture and the students' own culture can feel less important. It's a breath of fresh air to give the spotlight to the students' cultures and languages for a change.
In the fall and spring semesters, I organized events for students to share their culture and affirm that they are part of the diversity that makes Cincinnati State great.
I supported students through the scholarship application process, and each year, several of our students received recognition for their achievements.
