In the fall of 2018, I founded an organization called the Adult ESL Alliance of Greater Cincinnati, an initiative to increase collaboration between the various organizations offering adult ESL services in the Cincinnati area.

Participants have included educators and program coordinators working in adult ESL in colleges, non-profits, and government agencies, as well as primary and secondary schools with adult ESL for parents.
In July of 2018, I was elected to serve as a board member for the English Language Learning Foundation, Inc., which is the main source of external scholarships for local college students who speak English as an additional language.
At the 2019 scholarship ceremony, we awarded 32 students with scholarships totaling $18,000. A new record!
I worked at Cincinnati State from 2014-2020. My students were predominantly from West Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Some came to Cincinnati just to study and return abroad, but most often they were starting a new life as American immigrants. I had the great responsibility of helping them develop the cultural and linguistic skills they need to succeed in college coursework, future career pursuits, and life in the United States. Having more than once been an international student and an immigrant myself, I understand at least in part some of the challenges my students face. In the classroom, I drew from my training and experience teaching in diverse contexts to identify and address students' language needs. As the sole full-time ESL faculty at Cincinnati State, I was also responsible for all of the behind-the-scenes work, including hiring and managing adjunct instructors, and representing ESL student needs to the college. Working with the ESL population at Cincinnati State, I had the privilege to meet people who were at a major transition point in their lives and to work with them so that they are better prepared to achieve their goals.
"Professor Oliveira is the most qualified, organized, punctual, and helpful English instructor I ever had!"
"Great teacher, the instructor was interested, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable on the subject. She explained topics well and used many examples to reinforce her ideas. She was very open to students and helping them to succeed in English. She likes teaching."
"The instructor makes the course easy to understand. You cannot miss the next assignments. They are easy to find. You just need to refer to the last class PowerPoint. She answers all questions students ask her, and makes participate all students by using small work group. No one can be bored when we have class. She encourages people to practice English with extra-class sessions like conversation group. You always want to be in class, because you are sure to understand lessons. She is rigorous, respectful of rules, and sometimes humorous. We learn in a stress-free ambience, and we learn well."
"I really enjoyed my instructor's teaching, she will take her time to explain things. She's a great mentor. Always ready to help."
