New Zealand Age Group Rowing Analysis and Comment 2004 - 2025
An 2026 AI generated proposal in support of narrower age band Year Groups instead of Age Groups. I would suggest that it is best read with the AI speaker notes open.
The proposal steps from Sport NZ's "Relative Age Effect" discussion in Sport New Zealand’s Balance is Better section stresses that even a six month gap in age creates a huge advantage for the older student-athlete. This runs contrary to our current practice of allowing across-multiple-age entry from Year 9 - 13.
Rowing NZ 2025 Year Group Statement
Submission supporting Year Groups not NZSSRA Age Groups - updated December 13 2025
With the current controversies regarding Novice rowing and Age Group or Year Group rowing this presentation aims to develop a picture of what happens elsewhere.
With reference to international practise it also includes a possible Maadi Regatta programme including Age Groups and Year Groups. Ideas and comments would be appreciated. They will help to make a more useful presentation.
This is a Submission version of the presentatiuon on the left.
Remit proposing that Year Group classification replace Age Groups.
The remit was not passed. The opportunity to organise a more managable and fairer regatta, using a system with international precedent was foregone.
Comments supporting the remit.
