With the decline of sun spot cycle 24 I started operating FT8. Initially I was not that taken but then I realsed I was almost using FT8 to the exclusion of phone. Yes I become addicted to this mode particularly as I changed location and initially was only working qrp.
My current setup is an FT817nd with an MX-P50m PA feeding a 6 band inverted V dipole or DX Commander lite. Audio is via a ZLP Data box. For decoding I use WSJT-x logging directly in to Log4OM on an old HP Elitebook running Windows 10. From Jan 2021 I moved to a new home and now have a Mag Loop in the roof and an EFHW in addition to those above.
One of the most important points with these modes also often overlooked is the pc time. The time needs to be synced to better than 1 second. Windows 10 has inbuilt time sync that for some reason on my laptop never worked. There are a number of programs available to sync the time accurately and I opted for Dimension 4 but I had to regularly update the time while on air. This is fine when in the shack and connected to the internet but not possible if working portable, I could have used my mobile to connect but my current location must be one of the few places in the UK with very poor mobile coverage.
My solution was to purchase a low cost GPS device. I now have my time synced using GPS2Time.exe without the use of the internet.
