What will happen to the millions of tonnes of metals trapped in the sediments of the Tinto-Odiel estuary when climate change alters the conditions that hold them there?
PURPOSE To investigate the fate, release and potential removal of metal contamination in estuaries exposed to global change scenarios — sea-level rise, ocean acidification — with the Tinto-Odiel estuary as a reference system. FreeMetal seeks to understand the biogeochemical processes controlling the mobility of metal(loid)s and to anticipate their effects on ecosystems and coastal communities. This goal connects my three consolidated research lines: the environmental geochemistry of mine acid drainage-affected estuaries, the ecotoxicology of metals under global change conditions, and the development of new assessment tools — remote sensing, passive samplers — for environmental monitoring in dynamic settings.
