Explaining Mind Mapping: an Audio-Visual Approach
This YouTube tutorial provides a visual example of how to create a mind map by hand. Although students will being using an online platform to create their mind maps, it is important for students to understand how to create a mind map, and this four minute video conveys how to make one, as well as provide some tips and tricks on how to enhance the mind map.
This talk provides an overview of what a mind map is, why they are beneficial, and how to create one. In the classroom environment, I would show the beginning to about seven minutes into the video, which is where the most crucial information is.
Mind mapping is a brainstorming method that allows the creator to organize their thoughts in a concept that makes the most sense to them. There is no particular structure or order in creating a mind map. It helps the creator to organize, learn, retain, and recall the information on their mind map through use of colors, key words, images, and symbols. Using the example on the left, it is clear that the title or main topic of the mind map is in the center, with different color coded branches used to help organize each sub topic and find specific information easily.

How to use mindmeister.com
1) After reaching mindmeister.com, students should press continue with Google. This will link to their school Google account.
2) Then, students will select that they are a student and using the platform for educational use.
After setting up the account, a blank mind map should appear on the student's screen, as seen on the righthand side. Students will be instructed to type where it says, "My New Mind Map" the following: The three most important causes of the American Revolution. There is also a tutorial option of the site, which students will be asked to go through.
After establishing a title or center of the mind map, branches will be added on. Branches added from the topic (sibling branches) are a new color. Child branches are an add on to a subtopic, and can be outlined to share the same color by using the paintbrush option on the right hand side. Continue adding branches and sub-branches as needed to organize the information. To manually move a branch or sub branch, click on the box that wants to be moved, and hold the ALT key to move is anywhere on the screen/ page.
To the left is a mind map of the causes of the American Revolution, and which documents are relevant to each cause.
