Associate Professor, Department of Economics
Director, Master of Employment Research (MER)
Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada
I joined the Department of Economics at Memorial University of Newfoundland in August 2016 after spending more than a decade studying and working in the UK. I continue to develop research in the areas of vocational education and training, labour markets and employer behaviour across a variety of settings. I also took on the role of of Director of the Master of Employment Relations (MER) program in July 2020. The MER is an interdisciplinary program involving study in a variety of fields spanning the Faculties of Business Administration (FBA) and Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Over more than 10 years, I have jointly led (with my colleague Terence Hogarth, FGB) a programme of research on apprenticeships, training and skills, with particular interest in the employer and labour market perspectives and focus on the UK and Europe. I have carried out research for a number of government departments and other bodies in the UK and Europe, such as the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (Cedefop) and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). I have served as a Specialist Adviser to the UK House of Commons Education Select Committee and was an expert witness to the Joint Sub-Committee on Education, Skills and the Economy for an inquiry on apprenticeships. I also have extensive experience in collaborating with research partners throughout the UK and Europe.
