This event is held in February of each year. Tables are set up and manned by members of the different clubs of Leisure World. Residents can stop by and ask questions about the various activities. In the case of the woodshop - how to join, club dues, club meetings, certification process and training events that may be offered.
There are two Craft Fair events each year, one in mid-November and the other in mid-March. Each Leisure World club is represented with a table offering information and/or items for sale which they have made. The woodshop usually has half of their facility open offering many wonderful wood items for sale and demonstrations for everyone to see and enjoy.
Each year during the winter months, the wood shop creates over 50 wooden doll cradles. The woodshop is closed for a single day and over 25 volunteer woodworkers transform the woodshop into Santa’s Work Shop! When they have finished their work, 50 cradles have been assembled, painted with wood sealer and are ready to be distributed. The Leisure World quilters use their talents by creating tiny baby blankets for the dolls that the woodshop purchases for the cradles. They are then distributed to disadvantaged children in the East Valley at Christmas time.
For the past two years volunteers have been repairing and rebuilding doll houses that have been donated to the wood shop. They just completed the last one and it was auctioned off at the Craft Fair. The proceeds are used by the woodshop for other charitable projects such as the making of toy cars and doll cradles. We would like to thank our volunteers Joan Valdelski, Pat Watkins, David Mullins, Tommy Puhekker, Judy Harrington and Ira Leibowitz for the great job that they have done. They spent many hours rebuilding the shell that was donated to the shop into the quality finished project.
Note: The Doll House was donated to the children of Sunshine Acres Children’s Home. We thank our volunteers who made this possible.
