In my teaching, I employ a culturally relevant pedagogy and engage students in a discussion about the educational pipeline of students of color as well as in an analysis of the Community Cultural Wealth model to convey the value of higher education and the meaningful contributions that each student can make in academia and in different professional and career sectors. When I facilitate workshops and deliver my lesson plans, I always make a statement about my role as the facilitator of the topic of discussion, encouraging students to engage in the process of inquiry and discussion so that we all learn together. I opt to be students cheerleader and advocate more than an educator who just deposits information onto them.
Course Syllabus for COUN 7: Introduction to the Transfer Process
I would like to highlight that the two in-person COUN 7 course sections that I was assigned to teach this fall had less than ten students enrolled two weeks before the start of the semester. As a huge advocate for transfer, I developed an action plan to recruit students for both classess and avoid getting them cancelled. After emails were sent through the UC TAP and different program listservs at Mt. SAC (e.g. Transfer Center, El Centro, Honors Program, Bridge Program, etc.), the enrollment in the courses increased to over 45 students.

Facilitate a class session on the community cultural wealth model to empower students to see themselves as transfer scholars and pepare them to feel comfortable writing about themselves and highlighting the assets they bring to the classroom as well as the contributions they can make at the univerdity and in different career sectors.
In preparation for the personal narrative assignment, facilitate a class session on how to write insightful personal statements for transfer admission (e.g. UC PIQ's), support programs (e.g. CSU EOP) and scholarships (e.g. Mt. SAC Schoalrship Program).
