Professional Development

As the needs of our students continue to evolve, it is important for me to stay up-to-date with best practices to support their college success. That is one way I enact my commitment to equity, which is reflected in my engagement in professional development opportunities that allow me to become a better educator for all students by employing a culturally relevant pedagogy in the classroom and in my counseling sessions as well as by engaging in student advocacy beyond my counseling office and classroom.

Year-Round Professional Development Engagement

I am currently engaged in the following professional development trainings that conclude in spring 2024. As a former member of the Student Equity and Achievement Council (SPEAC), where I engaged in policy revision with other faculty, staff and administrators to promote student equity and success, I saw the need for student advocacy at different levels. Therefore, I am now preparing to make an impact not only in my counseling sessions and in my classroom but also campus-wide.

ACUE Course

Selected to be part of Mt. SAC's cohort F to participate in this course to expand my knowledge on Effective Teaching Practices. Have already implemented several practices in my classroom and plan to implement other ones moving forward.

Fall Transfer Counselor Conferences

In an attempt to keep my transfer knowledge up-to-date, I participated in the annual conferences below to learn about transfer and financial aid updates, initiatives, and advanced evaluation of academic records for transfer admission to better advise and support students through their transfer process.

Ensuring Transfer Success (ETS) Conference

Learned about UC campuses updates and attended the advanced evaluation sessions to learn more about transfer intricacies, which allow me to not only accurately advise students with external academic records but also to process IGETC certifications.

Regional AICCU Counselor Conference

Attended this in-person conference hosted by University of La Verne to learn more about admissions, financial aid, and student services at California’s private, nonprofit colleges and universities.

CSU Community College Counselor Conference

Aside from hearing about CSU campuses updates and the Transfer Success Pathway, particularly benefitted from attending the financial aid session as there are many changes and new language/terminology with the new FAFSA & CADAA forms.

Fall Counselor Trainings

As a life-long learner, I always engage in self-assessment and training that can help me better serve the students I work with. For instance, I completed the Student Success Workshop through my Mt. SAC portal on my own time. That was with the goal to familiarize myself with the updated online workshop that level 1 probation students see in order to be able to answer questions accordingly. Similarly, I met with Counseling Faculty colleague, Jesse lopez, for a one-on-one training to better understand pre and post pandemic probation and dismissal procedures.

Participated in this inaugural 2-day training to learn best practices in career counseling and prepare to facilitate the first Major Exploration Workshop offered by the Counseling deapartment.
