In my counseling, I use a challenge and support holistic approach when working with students, which includes high expectations with high support, holding each other accountable. I have learned that before we try to convey the value of any educational program to students, we have to help students see their own value first, increase their self-efficacy and empower them to become self-advocates and leaders in their communities in order to persist through completion.
With my energy and natural ability to connect with students and quickly build rapport with them in a safe space, we work as a team to accomplish the goals that we set for ourselves by assuming mutual responsibility throughout the process. Once I have my students' trust, then we get to work on those goals. Thus, when meeting a new student, I always spend plenty of time getting to know the student first. I inform the student that I like to take notes to remember them in the future, then I proceed with my notetaking. After inquiring about what they want to accomplish in the session, I assess and manage my time accordingly. If there is unfinished business that is not time-sensitive, I assure the student that we will get it done in a future counseling session, stress the importance of meeting with a counselor regularly, and encourage them to schedule a follow up appointment.
The sample notes below demonstrate the type of conversations and information I gather when I meet with a new student.

This subsection showcases different samples of educational plans with the respective notes. When deveoping educational plans, I do a quick academic background check to gather the following information to ensure accurate academic counseling:
Inquire about high school AP/IB credit
Inquire about previous attendance at other US institutions
Inquire about attendance at a school outside of the US where the language of instruction was not English
Career goal and how interest developed
major and how interest developed
Transfer interests
Then, I proceed to educational planning accordingly.

I encourage and facilitate student involvement on campus through personal referrals to special programs and being intentional about the clubs I recommend students to join. I also nominate them for awards and scholarships that can validate their experiences and support them financially. I then assist them with letters of recommendation and interview preparation if needed. I do all of this with the ultimate goal in mind to challenge the educational pipeline of historically underrepresented students and promote student success for every single student I work with. I do this for both current and former Mt. SAC students, whom I also support with graduate school applications and professional employment.

Participated in the 2-day Career Training to prepare to facilitate the first Major Exploration workshop of the semester.
At follow-up career counseling appointment, student informed me that she did reflect on the results from the previous week's assessment as well as the links I sent her. She mentioned that she is interested in Sonography at Cypress after talking to different people, including family members, someone currently in the program, and another person who just entered the field. Emphasized the importance of informational interviews and commended her for the work she did so far on that. Emailed student the template to request a more formal informational interview about the field. Also recommended her to look into shadowing opportunities since she has access to someone in the field to see if it's something she would be truly interested in. Emphasized the importance of experiential knowledge when making an informed decision about a career.
Recommended Juliet to put herself on the RAD Tech waitlist, and she expressed interest in it.
In general, when preparing for workshops, I always pay attention to my audience and prepare content, activities and materials accordingly.

I am also involved with the following committee:
Adjunct Counselor Committee Member
Besides attending monthly Dean's and Faculty meetings and acting as a Counseling Faculty liaison for two different academic departments on campus, I have also leveraged my transfer expertise to share critical transfer information and resources with my colleagues in the Counseling Department. For example, as a new Adjunct Training Committee member, I facilitated a Transfer Updates session, which included Cal-GETC and other topics, at the first Adjunct Counselor training in September. I also developed a "Transfer Readiness Checklist" of key admissions policies, requirements and best practices to keep in mind when advising students about transfer, which I presented to the Counseling Faculty at the October faculty meeting.
