Pinhole Camera and Perspective Sketching

In this LUMS Math Circles event, Dr. Murtaza Taj and Dr. Imran Anwar taught a group of kids about the fascinating history of the pinhole camera. They explained how this transformative idea led to many important discoveries over the centuries and reached our hands. A small documentary was presented where young Ibn Ibn al-Haytham was shown discovering the laws of the pinhole camera (from the 1001 inventions' video repositories ). Dr. Taj led the kids to a hands-on activity where they learned how to make their own pinhole cameras using basic materials like cardboard and tape. He showed them how to create a small hole in the cardboard to act as the camera's lens and how to position a piece of photographic paper inside to capture the image.

In addition to making their pinhole cameras, the kids also had the opportunity to practice their perspective sketching skills. Dr. Anwar and Dr. Taj showed them how to create accurate sketches of the objects and scenes they were capturing with their pinhole cameras. They explained how understanding perspective is crucial to creating realistic and convincing drawings. The kids were thrilled to see their homemade pinhole cameras in action, as they were able to capture some stunning images of their surroundings. They also gained a new appreciation for the history of photography and the science behind capturing images. By incorporating perspective sketching into the activity, the kids were able to further develop their artistic skills and apply mathematical concepts to their drawings.

Overall, it was a fun and educational event that sparked the kids' curiosity and creativity. The LUMS Math Circles program continues to provide engaging opportunities for kids to learn about math, science, and art in innovative ways.
