From Algorithms to Automation: How Math Moves Robots

"Robotics and other combinations will make the world pretty fantastic compared with today.~ Bill Gates"

We are thrilled to bring you a recap of the latest episode of "LUMS Math Circles" titled "From Algorithms to Automation: How Math Moves Robots." This captivating circle was conducted by the esteemed Dr. Abubakar, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, and Dr. Shaheen Nazir, Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, both from LUMS.

The stage was set with a captivating array of robots, igniting excitement and curiosity among our young participants. The circle commenced with Dr. Abubakar and Dr. Shaheen expertly introducing the concept of dimensions and parameters. They kicked off the discussion with a thought-provoking question: "What is a robot, and where do you encounter them?" The instructors skillfully elaborated on the students' insightful responses, emphasizing that robots are an integral part of our everyday lives.

The session then ventured into challenging maze puzzles, requiring students to think creatively to solve them. As they successfully cracked these puzzles, with guidance from the instructors, the students discovered how to transform 2D structures into 3D shapes. For instance, the instructors showcased how a Torus (a doughnut shape) could be constructed using simple techniques on a square sheet, leaving the kids astonished and elated.

Throughout the session, interactivity was paramount, with the inclusion of informative videos elucidating the inner workings of robots and their wide-ranging applications in both industry and daily life. The instructors provided hands-on demonstrations of robot arm functionality, using various props to simplify complex concepts, ensuring the students grasped the intricacies of these technologies.

In summary, this episode of "LUMS Math Circles" offered an exceptional fusion of robotics and mathematics, punctuated by jaw-dropping moments that left participants thoroughly engaged and inspired. The session concluded with group photographs, and, of course, the eagerly awaited Tori giveaways, leaving everyone with lasting memories of an exciting and educational experience.
