Safely rehoming an animal takes time, honesty, and preparation. Begin by ensuring the animal is healthy and up to date on veterinary care, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and parasite prevention, as properly vetted animals are significantly more successful in finding new homes. Create a detailed and honest description of the animal’s personality, habits, and any behavioral needs, and always meet potential adopters in a safe, public place or through a trusted organization. Many people have successfully rehomed animals through Facebook and community-based rehoming groups when done responsibly. Never give an animal away impulsively or without screening—asking questions and requesting references helps ensure a good match. Taking these steps protects the animal’s well-being and increases the likelihood of a smooth, permanent transition into a loving home.
We occasionally accept owner surrenders when foster space allows. Due to foster safety concerns, we cannot accept animals with a bite history or dogs that are dog-aggressive.
