Luca began teaching dance in 2022 soon after graduating. An unexpected email and a couple of job interviews later he was flying to Germany to start an artist in residency at Frankfurt International School (FIS). Here he was able to develop his pedagogy with young learners from 2yrs to 18yrs. Whilst at FIS he enriched the International Baccalaureate dance course engaging students in a range of contemporary dance technique and creative skills. Alongside curriculum enrichment, Luca delivered a series of beginners' ballet and stretching classes for both children and adults as part of the school's community programming.
Living in Germany allowed Luca to continue to work with Theater Mittendrin and Freies Fulda Theatre and through this connection he was invited in 2023 to lead a group of young people at the 34th Fulda Schultheatertage - an event that brought together 10 schools to explore the theme 'Flower Power' and the socio-political movement of the 70s.
Never one to shy away from using dance as a vehicle to engage in themes of any kind, Luca was also invited to run workshops as part of FIS's Grade 9 DaVinci Project - a multidisciplinary co-curricular event that combined the visual and performing arts with the sciences. The focus of the 2023 Project was Galileo, as such Luca devised workshops that helped students to understand the physics and mechanics of the human body through dance and movement exercises bringing abstract concepts to corporeal reality at the forefront of the students' learning.
The dance and theatre programme at FIS held two performances in 2023 that Luca worked with. FIS Dance Company performed an imaginative retelling of Charlie and Chocolate Factory for which Luca co-choreographed alongside fellow dance teacher and director Jez Gregg as well as designing the costume. For the Middle Years Theatre Ensemble production of 'The Magical Voyage of Ulysses', Luca designed and collated over 50 costumes for the performance.
Luca's time working at the FIS also presented him the opportunity to lead a homeroom of 14 Grade 9 students. The role had him leading them across the challenging terrain of the Manderscheid region in Germany, guiding them through team-building events through the year and acting as a mentor to students struggling with the pressures of exam season, relationships and homelife.
Luca's pastoral work with the G9 homeroom had him recognised by one of the senior leaders at the school who offered him the opportunity to travel with the school on the Kalahari Experience in South Africa.
The Kalahari Experience Education Trust has been working in the Kalahari since the 90s, with its roots existing much before. It was a honour for Luca to join the leadership team of the trip where he was able to further develop his pastoral skills. The experience gave him the chance to teach in the local communities: Luca primarily taught driving licence theory to a group of over 100 learners, whilst also delivering learning support for early-years English language and mathematics.
In November 2023 Luca returned to FIS where he performed live - using excerpts of his Kalahari journal as a soundscape - for the Kalahari Fundraising Concert.
