Luca started his formal dance training at Falmouth University, graduating in 2022. Here he developed passion for contemporary dance sensibilities, improvised performance and multi-disciplinary work. His time at university was greatly affected by the coronavirus pandemic, as such Luca became very familiar with dance-for-screen, distanced learning styles and he developed numerous creative solutions to working remotely as dance artist. During his training he learnt and honed aspects of Graham, Cunningham and other release-based techniques as well as classical ballet technique. He selected choreographic focused modules on dance-for-screen and site specific dance as well as attending masterclasses with the likes of Kevin Turner from Company Chameleon, Kay Crook of Chhaya Collective, the dancers of Extended Play and James Wilton Dance.
YUCCA DANCE
Yucca Dance is a collaborative duo; Yuxi and Luca met for the first time dancing to experimental synth-pop amongst piano skeletons in an abandoned shopping mall. They began working on the first version of IN THE ROUND on January 24 and were subsequently selected for the 2024 Spring Scratch Night at Dance Base on the Grassmarket, Edinburgh.
The show was then selected as a recipient of the Keep it Fringe fund, which allowed the duo to take their show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Performing at Greenside Venues, George Street, to packed out audiences and positive critical reception, Yucca Dance are looking to take their show to the next level! Watch this space...
Alongside the physical training Luca has become a keen dance academic, writing essays and presenting work on a range of sociopolitical discourses from cultural appropriation in dance, racism, gender performativity, sexism and queer academia. His efforts and continued engagement in dance academia got him the invitation to work with senior lecturer Dr Ruth Pethybridge on her Dance Futures podcast as a co-host and torch-bearer for the future generations of dancers. Currently running at three series, the podcast includes interviews with international dance practitioners such as Emilyn Claid, Theo Clinkard and Orrow Bell.
Even before attending university Luca had twice choreographed in Germany. The first time for The Common Players, Theater Mittendrin and Freies Fulda Theater (FTF) for their joint production of Echoes of Wartime (2018) and then again for the Dienstagspieler group directed by Barbara Gottwald of Theater Mittendrin. Luca has a continued relationship with both FTF and Theater Mittendrin and has choreographed for numerous productions including Stadtmaus + Feldmaus (2023), FISCHE SOLLTEN KEINEN SCHLUCKAUF HABEN (2023) and the 75th Anniversary celebrations of Tegut Supermarket.
Luca has continued to developed his dance artistry and practice by attending classes and workshops across Europe. He has gained new skills and ideas from Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company, Matthew Bourne's New Adventures, Frantic Assembly and Chen-Wei Lee's Gaga class.
Luca currently lives in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he is continuing his artistic practice and training with regular ballet, contemporary technique and contact improvisation classes.
See the Education page for information on the dance work that Luca has done in an educational context.
Dance for Screen
In collaboration with Falmouth University TV and Film graduate Patrick Rutherford, Luca choreographed his first short dance film in 2019. The piece was filmed in the corridor and bathroom of his first-year accomodation riffing on the absurdity of sharing space with strangers, the mundanity of functional interior design and some good ol' toilet humour.
