Brief history of LAC

The Loyola Astro Club in the Department of Mathematics came into existence in the 1980’s by Prof. K. Velmurugan. His passion and knowledge in astronomy elevated the club to be one of the predominant astronomical hubs in the city. It opened a new avenue to the academic excellence of our college.

He was instrumental for a 4” telescope housed on the terrace of the chemistry block to enlighten the students to explore the space. In the year 1986, when Halley’s Comet was near the earth’s surface our students and hundreds of people in and around the college witnessed the comet through the telescope. He has also conducted many intercollegiate quiz competitions in astronomy. He promoted astronomical observations and events to all of our students and motivated them to aspire in the field of astronomy. His contribution towards the growth of Loyola Astro Club in the Department of Mathematics is immense and highly commendable. The Department of Mathematics is proud of Prof. K. Velmurugan for his dedication and kindling young minds to pursue in the field of astronomy.

Loyola Astro Club rejuvenated with a new zeal in 2008. Dr. Indra RajaSingh, Former Head, Department of Mathematics was influential for buying 10” auto tracker telescope to our department in the process of reviving the club. Prof. J. Maria Roy Felix was appointed as the director of Loyola Astro Club. Dr.A.Victor Devadoss, Former Head, Department of Mathematics propelled the club to new heights. His contribution to the club is highly laudable.

Dr. M. A. Basker, Head, Department of Mathematics motivated and mentored the activities for the revival of the club and played a pivotal role in the revamping process and still continues to give his valuable suggestions till date. The astronomical mind behind the growth and development of the club till date is Dr.Suresh Mohan, Astro-photographer. He is the mentor who molds the activities of the club. The Loyola Astro Club place our sincere gratitude for all his contributions.

The Astro-club functions with the motto “Reaching the unreachable”. It operates to motivate the government school children and aspire them to become astronomy enthusiasts with a series of workshops and telescope observations. The club strives to rope-in more students and enable them to become future astronomers.
