Every year, our district hosts a fun fair called Leopard Friday for clubs and programs to promote themselves to the community. The problem is that STEM clubs in our district are underrepresented. To address this, IRHS came together to plan a booth to promote our robotics program to new students and parents who might not know about what we do. Our goal was to set up an engaging booth with activities for every age group. We hoped to foster newfound interest and spread the word about engineering and VEX Robotics.
IRHS officers were tasked with managing a Discord server (text communication platform) for all IRHS members and for the 1082 org. They sent out an announcement to inform times for setting up, times for managing booths, and service tasks available for volunteers.
The fair occurs in our high school courtyard. We picked a location with good shading to protect the equipment and robots and a large space for placing our partial field and two metal lab tables. Many IRHS members were there to help out with building the field and carrying all the equipment from our lab to the courtyard. The partial field with a VEX Spin Up goal is meant for the older kids to drive around and score with our 1082 competition bots. The two metal tables had VEX GO for both building and programming, and VEX 123 programming for younger kids. We also made sure to have candy (held in the Tipping Point goals) to hand out to kids as they stopped by for our activities.
Overall, Leopard Friday was a big success! We had so many people come by to check out our robotics booth and many parents and kids asked questions about the robotics program. Every kid enjoyed driving the high school VRC bots, building with VEX GO parts, and playing with VEX 123 robots.
We had many people ask about how to join and participate in the Lovejoy robotics programs, and many kids expressed wanting to try robotics in the future. We're very glad to see that we made an impact and spread the word about robotics to more people in our community.
