The foundation behind math is developing a number sense. What does that mean: being able to count, know the count is getting larger as you count, the last number counted is the amount, the difference between numbers, how to build numbers, writing and recognizing numbers. These skills will allow for a deeper understanding to emerge such as: greater than less than, operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) fractions etc.
Counting with shells: roll, touch and count to see who can fill it up first?
How to build numbers using real objects and visuals?
Fun feeding our stuffies: How much does he get..which number did you say? Can you find it?
Which one has more? Can you see it on the line? How do you know which is bigger?
How can we use snacks for math? How many do we have? Put them into two groups and change up the amount and discuss how many are there and how do you know? For example 3 cookies and a group of 5 cookies I see 8 cookies because I know 3+5= 8.. or two rows 3 on the top and 3 on the bottom I know it’s 6 because 3+3=6
