2023 grapes are Harvested!
Growing a nursery plant in a pot is the first step. It is planted on the soil in the spring and it takes 4 years to harvest the grapes to make wine and then 3 more years to drink the wine from the glass.
If you want to have a new vine tree you can cut a cane with a couple of buds and put the stem into the potting soil in the early spring. The buds break and leaves are coming out. By mid fall it grows for 1 meter and the leaves turn brown and then you put it on the ground soil. Next year the 1st year vine tree will grow but you have to wait at least till 3rd year before harvesting the grapes.
How much water should we put on the 1st year tree? What about the drainage of the soil? Is this vine healthy? Like humans, some grow well and some don't. Is it because of terroir? We have to look at the individual tree and treat it as what it needs to be. We will cut all the fruits until 3rd year. It will benefit us for the long term.
If you prune the tree correctly the buds will always break and it will grow. The pruning is one of the most important activities for the vine tree's health. We do trim thinking about 1.5 years ahead. If new shoots are coming out as I expected it gives me excitement. We can see the tiny flower buds and they are getting ready to produce the nice fruits. If you do the right thing then it bears many grapes for the next 10 years.
About a month after buds break, flowers bloom. They are not pretty but you feel the energy of the growth. Grapes are self-pollinating and they do not need to attract others such as bees. We have too many grape flowers and we need to cut off some so that the remaining have a healthy growth.
Pruning is the most important item to take care of the grape vine. See how I do in the video.
