To what extent does the perception of loners affect the mental health of the loner?
While the perception of loners has always been negative or looked down upon, many people don’t consider how this perception is affecting the loner themselves.
There's usually one person that stands out within a group of people and oftentimes that person is away from the group by themselves. Those people are often loners and are the “social outcasts” of society. Many of these people could be shy or distaste human interaction with one another. Often are introverts as well and have a small friend group or no friends at all to support them or socialize with. Either way the perception of these individuals is often negative and even the word loner is known to have a negative connotation within society. Being a loner is not always a bad title put upon someone, as it just lets someone know that they prefer to be alone than with others at that time. However there are always rumors or assumptions that will drag that title through the mud.
A person’s choices and experiences in life creates a loner and who they are. These individuals are often alone due to their own will or from other circumstances put upon them. Studies show that many loners just work better alone than collaborating with others. Through their life working together with others may just be uncomfortable or could be more inefficient in their minds. Sometimes loners can be made because they have no choice but to become one as well. In society many people will do their best to fit in with the crowd and blend in, however some that do standout are outed out. This could range from their background as a person and how they have grown up or to the style of their clothing to how they express their feelings towards other people around them. They may not want to be a loner and want to socialize with others, but the people around them may not accept them and so they become outcasts.
Human beings are social creatures by nature. We love to converse and socialize with one another. We are also prone to create rumors around each other however. Internal conflict is common between people within a society and it's not uncommon to hear something bad about a certain someone. Many of these certain someones are loners and because instead of being with others they tend to be alone and are targets of oppression. Many loners are grouped together due to their similar trait of staying independent. Environments such as schools show this often and heavily impact the mental health of the loner as they are forced to interact with many people if they enjoy it or not.
