Lola Dérez felt constantly gloomy since her falling-out with Zendeeka last winter. People closest to her tired of trying to lift her spirits. Someone suggested she get her first summer job, at an island summer camp for teenagers. It was the last thing Lola imagined doing that summer, but it beat her family’s usual stay-home summers, and she liked the idea of getting paid to work. She finally agreed to apply for the job when her middle-grade brother Jordan and his best friend are allowed to sign-up for the camp. Even before the Kalamehtee Island ferry motored away from the main land, Lola found herself in uncharted waters. A school friend had lied about joining her for the ten-day camp, leaving Lola to struggle through it alone. Then, at the orientation meeting, Lola learns she’s assigned to be a camp counselor to a group of middle-school girls! She loves science and math but doesn’t know the first thing about being a counselor. And this camp is no ordinary camp! The last five days of camp are dedicated to a grueling camp-wide STEM-skills competition: the Camp-K STEM Games. Stories swirl that kids finish events in tears and that there’s a mysterious presence in the woods on the island. Things turn serious when two middle-grade boys turn up missing, and Lola soon learns that it's Jordan and Pete! Lola disobeys the Director’s orders and decides to search for her brother. With the help of cabin girls and her new counselor friend, she follows clues and uses STEM skills to deduce what happened to the boys. As Lola and her brave camp friends discover the truth, the truth is more shocking than she ever imagined! Will Lola and her friends go missing too, or will they survive long enough to reveal the Camp’s true secret?
