Welcome to the Carbon Emission Tool for Construction Materials! This tool was developed by a team of MSc students from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to assess the embodied carbon of construction materials within the "cradle-to-site" boundary.
Feature of the Localization-Based Emission Factors Calculator
The calculator provides quantitative analysis of the embodied carbon of a construction material within the cradle-to-site boundary (i.e., Stage A1 to A4). It encompasses all input and output flows between the confines of the cradle up to the factory gate of the final processing operation, including delivery to the site of use ICE database (v2.0).
The calculator offers a novel “localization” approach, which eliminates the need to acquire emission factors specific to materials in Hong Kong. As noted by the Construction Industry Council, such information is not readily available in Hong Kong.
The calculator incorporates up-to-date authoritative data from regional or international documents in relation to life cycle assessment and emission factors.
The calculator provides separate calculation results for the production stage (A1-A3) and the transportation stage (A4) enabling a holistic analysis of carbon emissions during different stages of the construction process.
This calculator includes additional construction materials for which their energy fuel split was not provided in the ICE database.
