Design Principles

Our goal is to design lessons that support the learning of students with a wide range of understanding. In heterogeneous LMR classrooms, a teacher’s role is to foster mathematical thinking and facilitate the ’travel of ideas’ through whole class and small group discussions. Several design principles guided the curriculum design in support of this goal that are represented in the figure below.

In building and refining the lessons and the 5-phase lesson structure, we endeavored to provide teachers with opportunities to: (a) build on student thinking, affording students opportunities to contribute mathematical ideas and build and refine new ones rooted in what they understand; (b) provoke intellectual conflict and engage students in analysis and resolution of the conflict, affording students opportunities to make connections among mathematical ideas; (c) differentiate instruction in shared mathematical contexts, affording all students opportunities to participate and engage with core mathematical content.
