Manipulatives

Manipulatives: Cuisenaire Rods

The Learning Mathematics through Representations curriculum requires supplemental Cuisenaire rods. We obtained them from ETA hand2mind. phone: (800) 445-5985

  • Large Rods. Large rods that are visible to students as they are manipulated by a teacher (or students) in front of the class on a white board support whole class discussions. You can magnetize large rods with magnetic tape from your local hardware store in order to use them on your classroom whiteboard. Large rods also may be available as flat magnetic strips.
  • Small Wooden or Plastic Rods. Smaller rods are used by students at their desks. These rods are available in a variety of packages (set of 64 rods, sets of 74 rods, sets of 148 rods).
  • Transparency Rods. Transparency rods are used with overhead transparency projectors (we used sets of 60 transparency rods).
