Underwear has played a prominent role throughout Sadie’s practice, exploring themes including privacy, taboo and her own experience as a woman. Womanhood has been an ongoing motivation for her work, which has led her to think more widely about the human experience, time and fragility; further perpetuated by the effects of the pandemic.
Sadie’s piece considers the crisis within womanhood and the weight that can be carried with that. The piece developed as she became interested in the markings of underwear, impressions made through printing with it and pressing into clay. The plaster used to create the impression of underwear and pillow marks is an important feature in Sadie’s work, it provides lightness and subtlety in combination with items of an intimate nature. The plaster captures the underwear and pillow and suspends them in time.
The underwear, weighing heavy on the pillow is a statement for the crisis of womanhood. The plaster cast attempts to show the fragile and delicate, yet resilient nature of women.
