Throughout this pandemic the world has stopped and taken pause to realise what we do in our day to day lives. By doing this, we have all shut our doors and refrained from seeing our family and friends, making it harder to process and express feelings to the people we love, therefore creating a sense of loneliness in the world, with no-one to turn to. In these times it is hard to find an escape from reality, an escape from closed doors and the four walls we live in.
Living in Crisis for artist Rachael Dean, is the dealing and processing of one’s emotions during this pandemic. Throughout this past year she has dealt with feelings of loneliness, isolation, and heartbreak. Through experimenting with ways to process her emotions, she has used her practice to convert those feelings into a more positive view on life, through lockdown.
Rachael Dean uses her morning walks with her dog within her practice to capture her experience through colour, line, sound and drawings within those spaces of nature. She takes a single moment of peacefulness and tranquillity to develop her pieces.
In this exhibition Rachael has used her drawings and colours of calm to create a trio of sculptures. Even in the shattered reality we find beauty in nature, with a sense of calm. The shards of glass and tiles, printed with her drawings, in comforting colours portray the starkness between how she wants to feel and how she actually feels. Where Rachael is now and where she wants to be is represented in the works of art.
