Grace’s art work is based upon the idea of boredom, and the little things that happen in everyday life. Using herself as a reference, she creates scenes about the things that have happened during the lockdowns and the monotonous things that occur in life. Graces work is a response to living in a crisis, trying to enjoy little moments rather than focusing on the real world.
Grace created the animation about doing a load of washing and filling the washer. Something that would be considered a ‘boring’ chore, she tried to add moments of doing little things whilst doing the chore. Zooming into the washing machine when it’s on a cycle showing the loss of time, and showing the cycle
Grace uses the medium of animation to show these moments, the medium is versatile and any story can be told with it. Using paper animation creates a sketchy feel, that isn’t completely perfect or smooth.
Inspired by stop motion animation studios Laika and clips from Monty Python. Both studios use stop motion to tell stories, which is created by taking single photos of a puppet then edited together to create a moving image. Grace uses gouache and paint pens for the puppets, the gouache creates a softness for things like fabrics, and paint pens for the skin.
When animating the paper puppets she will take a photo on a new movement and then use Procreate to edit all the images together.
