Below are 5 vocabulary activities that teachers can incorporate into their literacy lessons to support student learning.
Before the reading- Introducing target words
During the reading- Briefly explain target words as well as other words that may affect comprehension
After the reading- Introduce or review target words
Teachers can teach certain or new vocabulary words by using read alouds. At the start of reading the book, the teacher can start by introducing the targeted words pertaining to the book. Writing them down of the big, white sticky note posters & referencing those throughout the story. When students heard the word- they can signal the teacher by putting their hand on their head or a finger on their nose. At the end of the book, we could go back and review the words- creating kid friendly vocabulary definitions.
Read alouds are important for vocabulary instruction because it builds many important foundational skills, introduces vocabulary, provides a model of fluent reading, shows the students expressive reading, and helps students understand what reading for pleasure is all about.
The teacher can assign each student a letter in the alphabet and students will then be instructed to create their own vocabulary card.
The card must have the letter in upper & lower case form at the top, in the middle students will put a word starting with that letter, under the word students will draw a small picture of the word they chose, and then under the small picture student will use the word in the sentence. So, overall it is 4 parts to the activity.
Students will be given a letter in the alphabet
Students will write their letter in upper & lower case form at the top of their card
In the middle of the card. the students will write a word that starts with that letter
Underneath of the word, students will small draw a picture of that word
And finally, under the small picture students will use that word in a sentence
Students will be in groups of 3-4 and assign each group a vocabulary word
Students will be given time research their words and prepare some short type of presentation for their group
Art work
A rhyme
A song
A short drama, etc
I personally like this idea because it gives the students a chance to be creative and crafty. We're allowing them to show us a side we might not see often. Giving them free range to complete this activity can boost motivation to learn, confidence, and encourage students wanting them to do activites like these more often.
The teacher will put vocabulary words on cards and students will act them out, not using any words or making noises.
Turning the lessons and teachable moments in activities that not only get the students up & out of their seat but, are actively engaging with you.
This game is similar to Pictionary- students draw an example of the word on the board and the rest of the group has to guess the word.
Personally, I would utilize both in my lesson for the day. I would use Vocabulary Charades as a whole group teacher-led actitivy and then, allow students to play Vocabulary Pictionary in small student-led groups.
For vocabulary practice, the teacher can chose the word
Students will activate their prior knowledge to brainstorm/come up with related words or concepts
The can then be put into categories
done by- underlining or highlight each category in a different color
The main word goes in the center of their paper/poster
The subcategories will be drawn in circles around the main word
The related words may be drawn can be drawn off of the subcatergories
