Comprehension is the ability to understand and interpret the text you are reading. A person who has good comprehension skill should be able to accurately understand a text they have read. while reading the text they should be able to decode words, make connections, identufy main ideas/messages and key detials, and make inferences and predictions. Comprehension is important because it helps the reader understand the meaning of the text as well as improves there vocabulary, and language skills.
Have your students make personal connections to the text/story as they are reading. By having the students make personal connection to the story/text you are helping them make meaning of the text/story that they are reading, which will help engage them in the reading more.
Encourage students to make predictions. By having students make predictions about the reading you are allowing them to use their critical thinking skills to think ahead and predicted what they believe will happen in the text/story.
Encourage students to ask questions while they are reading a text/story. Encouraging stidents to ask questions will help deepen their meaning of the information within the text.
Teach students to monitor their comprehension as they are reading. By having a student stop and think about what they just read ensure that the students are understanding the text.
Have your students create a visual image of the reading. This will create a deeper understanding of the text/story because the student will have a visual image to connect the story back to.
Have the student summerize the reading. By having the students summerize the story you are ensuring that the students comprehens the reading and its meaning.
