To present a single, central argument, explained and supported by evidence. The paragraph forms the cornerstone of all academic genres.
A paragraph is a unified piece of writing in which a single idea or claim is developed. It may stand alone as, for example, the answer to a short response question or it may be part of an extended piece of prose writing.
A PEEL paragraph is a piece of writing that requires you to respond to a question .
It is a way to organise your paragraphs and ensure you have a well-developed argument that is supported by evidence.
The simple elements that comprise the PEEL format are the main ingredients of all great paragraphs. Regardless of whether you are writing a research paper, personal, critical, or argumentative essay, in most respects, your paragraph should be modelled following the PEEL design.
Exceptions may occur in an extended response for particular paragraphs that are small and not fully developed, i.e., short transition paragraphs.
Write in third person. Do not use personal pronouns.
Avoid using contractions e.g. write ‘did not’ instead of ‘didn’t’
Write in a formal manner. Avoid colloquial language (e.g. writing how you speak). Your language should be formal and vocabulary specific and appropriate to the subject matter
Tense may vary depending on purpose but needs to be consistent.
Show cause such as: if, then, because
Show sequence such as: firstly, finally
Indicate addition such as: also, as well as, furthermore, besides
Show contrast such as: however, nevertheless, on the other hand
Express inference such as: therefore, consequently, accordingly
Indicate viewpoints such as: in spite of, with regard to, in view of
Something to keep in mind is that PEEL is a quite generic structure and as your writing gets more advanced, it’ll start to look more like PEEEEEEL! This is because you’ll be including a lot of examples and explanations to build a strong, convincing argument.
There can be several pieces of evidence and explanation throughout the text, but there should be only one link, and it should be at the end of the PEEL paragraph.
