Impacts of Computing & Fostering an Inclusive Computing Culture

From the K12 CS Framework:

Impacts of Computing: Computing affects many aspects of the world in both positive and negative ways at local, national, and global levels. Individuals and communities influence computing through their behaviors and cultural and social interactions, and in turn, computing influences new cultural practices. An informed and responsible person should understand the social implications of the digital world, including equity and access to computing.

Also, from the K12 CS Framework:

Practice 1. Fostering an Inclusive Computing Culture: Building an inclusive and diverse computing culture requires strategies for incorporating perspectives from people of different genders, ethnicities, and abilities. Incorporating these perspectives involves understanding the personal, ethical, social, economic, and cultural contexts in which people operate. Considering the needs of diverse users during the design process is essential to producing inclusive computational products.

Fostering an Inclusive Computing Culture is not something that should be taught as a lesson but should be part of the culture of a computer science class on a daily basis.

We should intentionally plan to include lessons and ideas that support these standards and create an inclusive culture. We should also be flexible enough to include current events in our classes when it would be appropriate. Partnering with a Social Studies teacher or librarian can be a help in aligning to some of these standards.

Diversity in CS

San Francisco Unified School District has created poster sets of diverse people in CS that have scavenger hunts and Kahoot quizzes that go along with them. Some also have binary-ASCII activities and Bee-Bot mat cards and activities, as well.

Below is a collection of texts (some books, websites, and articles on the web) that can be used to support these standards.
