Infusing Literacy
in the K-5 Classroom
with Computer Science
Over the last half decade, computer science (CS) has been called the “4th literacy” or a “new literacy” on multiple occasions (Raja, 2017; Shein, 2014; Wilson, 2013). Moreover, CS has been examined as means of modern storytelling (Kelleher, Pausch & Kiesler, 2007) and even looked at under the paradigm of a modern language arts classroom using the writer’s workshop approach (Burke & Kafai 2012). However, little research or documented practitioner work has gone into looking at how texts, language, and vocabulary play into the development of a broader and more well rounded CS and computational thinking (CT) experience for students in K-5 classrooms or how they can be used to help students meet the CSTA Standards (2017).
This site seeks to increase awareness of the resources available for using texts and literacy to increase engagement in and success with CS educational experiences, as well as how CS can be integrated into English Language Arts (ELA) and Social Studies instruction at the K-5 level. CS specific and non-CS specific books, periodicals, environmental texts, and tools to increase understanding of CS and CS vocabulary are included.
