H4n connected to computer via USB and one XLR mic connected to H4n

Connecting XLR microphone to H4n port 1

1. Connect Sony ECM-674 microphone to H4n port 1

Connecting H4n to computer via USB

1. AUDIO I/F -> CONNECT

2. Press port 1 button in H4N in order to activate the XLR microphone (check that port 1 button has a red light on)

3. MONITOR ON (if you want to connect auricular to the H4N and listen live)

4. PHANTOM ON +48V (when using a condenser mic, like Sony ECM 672)

5. PLUG-IN ON

6. Don't forget to set mic levels between 70-80

Effects Settings for Podcasting/Voice over 

Note: The effects works when the H4n recorder is connected via USB to a computer and the frequency is set to 44.1 kHz.

1. Menu -> EFFECT

2. Click on the effect selected by default (the last effect opened)

3. Scroll until you reach number 50

4. Click on EDIT

   1. Click on PRE AMP and edit these settings:

      • OFF/ON: ON

      • TYPE: AG MPRE

      • COMP: 5

      • DE-ESSER: 5

      • LOW CUT: 5

      • MIDDLE: 0dB

      • TREBBLE: 0dB

      • BASS: -6dB (for Voice over) / 0dB (for Podcasting)

      • LEVEL: 80

      • ZNR: 8

   2. EFX: OFF

   3. LEVEL: 80

   4. RENAME: Give it a name

   5. STORE -> EXECUTE

OBS Studio and H4n recorder

1. Install OBS Studio:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio

sudo apt update

sudo apt install ffmpeg obs-studio

2. Connect H4n recorder to computer via USB

3. Launch OBS Studio

4. Go to Preferences -> Audio and change Sample Rate to 44.1 kHz

5. Launch PulseAudio Volume Control or Gnome Control Center->Sound and be sure to set these settings:

SimpleScreenRecorder and H4n recorder

1. Connect H4n recorder to computer via USB

2. Launch SimpleScreenRecorder and check settings in image below

3. Launch Gnome Control Center->Sound and check settings in image below

Disconnect the H4n when finished

1. Menu - DISCONNECT
